Problem with sleeping

Posted by HUNTER116 on 6/30/2009 10:30:00 PM (Report abuse)
I just realized that I might have some strange problem with sleeping.
Every night I stay up until it's already as bright as it's gonna get outside
and then I close my curtains and go decide to go to sleep.

But as i'm typing this it's 4.30 in the morning and over an hour ago
i decided to turn off my laptop and go to sleep, yet here I am awake
and typing...i felt tired (and still do) and was about to turn off the laptop
but then decided to start playing a game on it, it's like this most nights, even
though i'm tired and want to go to sleep I just can't bring myself to turn everything
off and go to sleep.and when I do go to sleep I end up sleeping in till around 4 in the
afternoon and I would stay in bed alot longer but my mom doesn't let me.
It's different when I have school, I know what happens to me in school when I get
less then 5 hours sleep for 2 or 3 nights in a row...but when there's nothing like
school I stay up nearly everytime until it's bright outside, even when i'm already tired
and want to go to bed, I stay up...
Does my mind just prefer being almost nocturnal by sleeping through most the day
and staying through the whole night?
Do I have some kind of problem that I need help with?
Do I just need more self control on going to bed?
or is it something more serious?

"Do I just need more self control on going to bed?"
probably.

I kinda did the same thing when i was a kid, i just chalk it up to having an immutable lust for life :)

I'd say it's not a big deal, don't worry about it, you just have an active mind

Ok, there's actually a biological explanation for all of this.

Everyone has a rhythm called a "circadian rhythm". It dictates when person gets tired and when they wake up, and when it's normal, it's in-sync with the sun.

There's a part of your brain that produces a substance called melatonin. Melatonin makes you sleepy. Melatonin is produced when ultraviolet light is no longer present, and humans feel best when it increases/decreases its production gradually (like, say, with sunrise and sunset. Biologically, we're not supposed to need alarm clocks.) Basically, it's your brain's way of telling you to be tired when it's dark out.

Because you're staying up looking at a bright computer screen, your brain isn't producing melatonin in the cycle and amounts it should. You feel physically exhausted, as you should, but you're not allowing your brain to secrete the substance that makes you sleep.

It'll take a few days to get your cycle back on track. I would start by simply shutting off the computer at an earlier time each day, and laying down. before long, you'll start feeling naturally tired when you should. And when that happens, you'll be awake during the day, you'll get more vitamin D, and you'll find your sleep to be more restful, since it's at night. You'll feel better all around.

i'm 15 years old, and if i told my mom that i think it's some kind of
a problem trying to get myself to go to sleep early she'll just say
i'm being stupid (she already knows i stay up late she tries to get
me to go to bed earlier but it doesn't work)

Thanks, but is it healthy to have that kind of a sleeping habit when your 15 years old?
I'm on my holidays from school now, but on school nights i force myself (or more like my
mom forces me) to turn everything off and go to bed.
I'm not exactly sure if i'm more focused at night or not, but i definitely prefer night to day

I'm not exactly sure but it seems some of us are "larks" and some of us are "night owls". I took a psychology class two semesters ago for college and learned that some people (larks) are more focused during the day while others (night owls) are more focused at night. Me (just like you seem to be)...I'm a night owl. I would love it if I could stay in bed during day hours and be up during the night. I am just more focus, hence the reason I have to take night classes for me to do good in school.
