Why are people so cruel?

In school theres loads of different lables like punk, jock, chav, emo ect. and emos are supposed to hate chavs and likewise, but when a chav makes fun of an emo for slitting there wrists nobody realises the seriousness, this person wants attencion or is hurting so much that they are willing to hurt themselves, then chavs make fun, i dont understand how people could be so cruel =[

Sadly it's the world in which we live today.
People are cruel and heartless. Not everyone, but a lot of people are.
In high school especially, if you're a "popular" you cannot associate with the "geeks" they're stupid unwritten laws that come with every highschool as far as I know, it's really stupid but I think it's the way it'll always be. I personally didn't give a toss in high school I was friends with people I thought were nice & spoke to them with respect, regardless of them being a "chav" "emo" "goth" or whatever, people should treat others they way they'd like to be treated!

duh...its because your stilll in grade school. people are going to laugh at what they dont know. they dont realize how serious it is to cut yourself.
they dont know how to react. they want to look cool because they are cutting down someone that is beneath them.
YOU are the one who realizes the situation and you need to take the risk of making things better. if you hear a "chav" making fun of one...you need to make sure that they dont hear, or say something to the chav about how they are pricks and they need to worry about themselves before they pick on others.
